CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS
CARLISLE
CROSS COUNTRY
- 6th DECEMBER 2003 A small group of ADAC runners as well as a large amount of very eager youngsters from local schools attended a cross country event recently. The event was hosted by Carlisle Aspatria Athletics Club and was held at the Sheepmount playing fields in Carlisle. It was a pleasant morning that greeted the competitors this coupled with the firm underfoot conditions meant that it was not going to be too testing an outing which was good as many of the school children were making their debut on this terrain. During February and March there as several schools events taking place at both local and national levels so the Carlisle meeting was a perfect opportunity for them to get a taste of things to come. The under 9 Girls race set the event into action and it was a splendid start for us. ADAC member Sophie Robinson running for Newington Primary School crossed the line comfortably in first place from team mate Melissa Tweedie and Faye Johnstone of the host club took the 3d place. Courtney Nelson was Newington’s next runner home in 8th place which was enough to give them1st team medals with Abbie Smith and Shannon Martin enjoying their experiences coming home 9th and 10th it was a good start for our local scools. Victoria Illingworth, Heather Prentice and Katie Lockhart represented Kirkpatrick Fleming School and all performed well taking 4th 5th and 11th positions. In the under 9 boys race Brydekirks Tristan Chrichton worked hard to earn himself 3d place and strong finishes from Callum Sloan 5th and Daniel Alexander 8th secured them the school the winner’s team medals. There were also fine runs from Fergus Denton 11th Gordon Henderson 12th and Max Elliot 13th. Newington had good representation from Jack Oconnor 4th Connor Smith 14th James Muir 16th Logan Crieghton 17th Robbie McWhirter 19th and Ryan Ferguson 20th also doing their school proud were William Reay 6th and Freddie Campbell 10th from Kirkpatrick. Mark Hunter from ADAC continues to improve and was happy with his 7th place. The under 11 girls were eager to set out and follow in the success of their younger schoolmates but the competition was tough with Cumbria club runners taking the top 5 places. Jessica Campbell of ADAC battled well amongst the experienced runners and should be well pleased with her position of 6th as should Nicola Johnstone 9th Debbie Smith 18th Amy Lindsay 21st and Leona Evans 22nd of Hecklegirth Primary School. Newington had no fewer than 9 girls entered, Kendra Byers 12th Sarah White 13th Michaela Cummins14th Teri McClymont 15th Rachel Grey16th Rebecca Grieve17th Hayley Woodhouse 19th and Caitlin Carroll 20th. It really was so pleasing to see the enthusiasm shown by all the girls as they were cheered on from the sidelines they really did look as though they were having fun, which is all so often forgotten in events such as these. The biggest field of the day by far was the under 11 boys run and this also saw the most thrilling finish. Glen Mackie of Brydekirk Primary and Grant Murdy of Ellenborough AC had a great tussle only 1 second separated the boys at the finish and it was a real brave and determined effort by Glen that got his nose in front. Yet again good positioning by the other two of the Brydekirk boys Liam Carruthers 7th and Jamie Sloan 10th enabled them to take more winning team medals back to their village school. The Langholm Primary quintet of Andrew Paisley 6th Iain Little 9th Joshua Haldane 19th Jamie Gormley 21st and Alistair Little 22nd all performed really well. Newington once more had the biggest contingent of entries Bruce Jamieson 8th Nathan Hutton 12th Ryan Latimer 14th Adam Torbett 16th James Sharkey 17th Nathan McGregor 25th Andrew McGowan 27th Stefan Service 28th Gavin Dalgliesh 29th Kyle Kay 30th Ben Kirkpatrick 31st Dean Robinson 32nd Nathan Davidson 36th and Jamie Robison 37th.Good bunching by these lads will hep them when they come to run at the National events later this year. Cameron lochkart 18th Robbie Robertson 24th and Sean Cruikshank 35th were Kirkpatrick Flemings reps and Gavin Evans 23d Liam Murray 26th and Connor Burgess 34th made up the trio from Hecklegirth. It really was a superb effort by all of these children who it would be fair to say that the majority of them are really inexperienced at an event of this kind and it was just reward for them to take home so many medals and for all those who competed and crossed the finishing line whatever their position well done and they should give themselves a huge pat on the back. With all the excitement of the younger races over it was onward to the older groups. ADAC had 3 girls from the club in the under 13 event Colette Irving Jemma Hunter and Natalie Robson the girls grouped well and although not in contention with the leading runners did well to cross in 8th 9th and 10th places. Rachel Robson was the sole local entrant in the under 15 girls run and was rewarded with a bronze medal. The senior ladies event was well represented by the club with four entrants. Newcomer Gillian Reid was the highest finisher in 5th place just ahead of Louise Hopper 7th and Caroline Legg 8th. Jean Robson who is fast improving was not too far behind in 10th place which earned the ADAC quartet their first winning team prize for quite a long time. Take note ADAC men! Finally it was the turn of the senior men and here it was a very comfortable victory for ADAC runner Mark Whitelaw he always looked in control and was never headed on the three lap course runner up was Gary Dean of Border Harriers and Bill Gardner of Lancaster & Morecambe AC was 3d.John Robson of ADAC also ran a good solid race and crossed in a very creditable 10th place. Next event for ADAC members is the West District X Country Championships at Beach Park Irvine on Saturday January 10th it is pre entry only and entries are now closed however the National X Country Champs take place on Saturday February 22nd at Perth anyone wishing to enter please contact Caroline Legg 01461205350.The ADAC Open River Races are on Sunday February 29th and entries will be accepted on the day further details of these can be checked out on the club website annan.district.athletics.btinternet.co.uk Final the first of the 2004 ADAC handicap runs will be held on Saturday January 17th 10.30am start from the Everholm Annan all abilities and non members more than welcome.
