Criffell Hill Race - 18th March 2007
Mark on the ascent to Knockendoch On the advice of the Mountain Rescue this years race was shortened to up and down Knockendoch, this was because of 40 mph winds resulting in temperatures down to -4C with some white stuff thrown in for good measure. The general opinion of the runners at the start was of disappointment and comments of "it’s not that bad, we would be all right after all we are hill runners, rough, tough and in the general publics eye’s mad". Funny though by the finish an about turn had taken place and maybe we are not quite as rough, tough and even as mad as we thought. It was the right decision. If we thought for one minute that it would be far less a demanding race, think again, ploughing our way through knee deep peat bog for the majority of the course put paid to that whimsical thought. Going up and trying to find solid ground to give reasonable purchase was a lottery as we slipped and slurped all over the place therefore coming down was turned into a new extreme sport of "Skating In Thick Mud" invariably not always carried out in an upright position. Never the less 40 of us started and finished a bit dirtier and colder but all in one piece. Brian Marshal was a clear winner in 37.33 minutes with Andrew Wright 2nd in 39.10 minutes. First local runner home was 3rd placed Marcus Scotney who runs for Shettleston in 40.57 minutes. In the ladies race Jill Mykura was 1st home and 13th over all in 46.15 minutes with local athlete Shirley Singh 2nd in 56.02 minutes and 28th over all. ADAC had a good showing with five of us taking part, Mark Whitelaw 8th – 43.24 minutes. Andy Fairgrieve 12th – 45.38 minutes. Roger Irving 15th – 48.30 minutes. Nigel Priestley 32nd – 57.43 minutes. Jean Robson 39th – 64.35 minutes. Note: Full results of Criffell and Chapelgill can be found against the appropriate race on the 2007 ADAC Hill Calendar Chapelgill Hill Race - 17th March 2007 44 runners took part in this years event with only one ADAC competitor. The race was won by Stewart Whittle of Carnethy in 21.15 with Alan Smith in 2nd place in 22.14. John Robson completed the course in 27.10 finishing in 26th place. Carnethy 5 Hills Race -17th February 2007 The record field of 487 runners at this years Carnethy 5 Hills Race were blessed with such a beautiful spring day that it was hard to believe that it was early February. No gale force winds and permafrost of a year ago, it was possible to warm up and stay warm without several layers of thermal protection. This race seems to have become the unofficial start to the New Year’s Hill Racing Season and is a first chance to see how friends/ competitors have come through the off season. Five ADAC members ran and were reasonably happy with their performances as it is still early season. Andy Fairgrieve performed best of all to take 3.5 minutes off of his PB, it must be all that Tough Guy training!! The race was won by defending champion Rob Jebb of Bingley closely followed by Jethro Lennox of Shettleston. Angela Mudge of Carnethy won the ladies race for the 10th time beating Natalie White of Bingley into second place.

Greenmantle Dash 2nd January 2007 The first race in the club’s 2007 Hill Running Championship took place at Broughton on the 2nd January when five members of ADAC having survived the festive season, three of whom ran at Langholm the previous day, took part in this years race which was held during a break in the bad weather. Mild and bright conditions did not reflect the state of the course, however, the burn was big, the field was the "glauriest" ever seen, and the hill itself was very slippy. This did not deter 119 runners taking part with some excellent times being recorded. First home for the club was Andy Fairgrieve in 20th position in a time of 19.31 minutes. Jim Buchanan followed some way behind in 65th place in 24.05 with Gordon Vivers close behind in 24.15(67th). Johnny Minto and Jean Robson also had good tussle with Johnny making it in 26.41, 14 seconds ahead of Jean in 84th and 88th places respectively. Rachel Robson did well to come in 95th with a time of 28.30minutes, and fellow club member at Nithsdale Willie McIntosh, having a break from coaching, was in 85th place in a time of 26.44 minutes. Gordon, taking part in his first hill race, suffered from not having hill shoes, preventing him from recording a much faster time. Johnny will come through as well if he can concentrate on hill work to strengthen his climbing muscles. Full results on www.shr.uk.com The only disappointing feature was that Andy didn't throw himself into the river afterwards. Andy is in training for the "Tough Man" event at the end of January, and he is getting up to lots of insane things at the moment. Ruth bought the entry for him as his Christmas present. Most of the members are convinced she took out an insurance policy on him at the same time! Andy and Ruth's boys, Alasdair and Ewan took part in the junior event, the Greenmantle Gallop, 3Km and 90 Metres climb, which included the burn and the muddy field before a short ascent. They returned times of 21.57minutes for Alasdair and 23.20 for Ewan. Both enjoyed it and cannot wait until next year’s event. Ewan was a bit concerned at the end though, he thought he had a fish in one of his shoes!
