TINTO HILL RACE

  SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2007

Our last championship hill run of 2007 was at Tinto on Saturday and the club had it’s best turnout of the year with eight of us taking part. This race is rapidly growing in popularity and this year another record was recorded with 248 runners and 246 finishers. It was a close battle up front between Joe Symonds and Jethro Lennox (3 times winner) with Joe coming off best with a time of 30.17 minutes. Although having to be content with second place Jethro had the satisfaction of recording a PB of 30.32 minutes. In the female race Angela Mudge was a clear winner in 10^th place overall with a time of 34.39 minutes.

Two of our eight runners had mixed fortunes in that Jean had a nasty fall descending which resulted in some impressive cuts to her leg and Marks dodgy ankle gave way once more resulting in a hobble to the finish. The rest of us were all happy with our end of season form. New club member Brian Harper had his first run out on the hills and is a definite convert enjoying his day immensely.

MANOR WATER

SATURDAY 13th OCTOBER 2007

The penultimate ADAC hill race of 2007 took place on Saturday at Manor Water near Peebles. It’s a 10 miler, 5 miles out then retrace your route back to the finish. Because it is all fairly gradual climbing it tricks you in to more running than usual, which unfortunately this year was into a head wind. The run back is fast if you still have the legs for it and ground conditions are as good as you get on open heather moor.

The field was slightly down on last year’s record number with 77 starters. The ADAC contingent comprised of Roger Irving 15^th in 1hr 19.11 mins, Mark Whitelaw still recovering from his ankle injury was 26^th in 1hr 23.35 mins, Dan Watson in 1hr 24.19 mins and Nigel Priestly 66^th in 1hr 42.09 mins who is recovering from a long term chest infection. Is running good for you health??

The race winner was Brian Marshal who won for the second year in a row, which is the first time this has been achieved in the races 15 year history.

Borrowdale Fell Race - 4th August 07

With work commitments and injuries galore in the Hill section at the moment a depleted ADAC squad of Dan Watson and Andy Fairgrieve was all that managed the short trek to the picturesque village of Rosthwaite for the 2007 Borrowdale Fell Race.

The usual high quality field was in attendance with the cream of English Fell runners raring to go.

This year, believe it or not saw the race route cut slightly short. The Mountain Rescue radioed from Scafell Pike to say conditions, even in mid-summer, were too dangerous and advised that this peak was to be avoided.  Conditions in Borrowdale were very wet to say the least, with the burns and rivers running many feet higher than normal. Hence a couple of miles and some hairy climbing and descending were avoided.

This still left over 15 miles and about 5000 feet of climbing!

The race stated promptly and Dan and I managed to avoid getting crushed in the start stampede only just. The usual bottle neck around the village meant a steady start. Once onto the hill proper it was soon evident that there had been a huge amount of rain recently.

Dan and I settled into a steady pace, conscious of the distance and climbing still to come. The low cloud at the start was lifting gradually, only clinging to the very tops as the race progressed. This gave us many spectacular views over the Cumbrian mountains and lakes.

The runners gradually strung out as the race progressed, Dan and I fell in with groups who seemed to know their way. Gradually worked our way down the list of checkpoints where dozens and dozens of spectators gathered, all offering jelly babies or drinks from water bottles. Not a sight we are used to in Scottish hill races. All the peaks and especially Honister Pass have crowds of well wishers keen to give an encouraging clap or shout as you pass and it does seem to make a difference. I felt a lightness of step and a little burst of fresh energy as I ran past the crowds at Honister Slate Mine, before the reality of the last climb up Dale Head brought me to my senses again. It seemed a much longer slog this year, the top disappearing high above into the mist. At least this is the final climb in the race.

Working your way down from the top, trying to let tired legs open up a stride, as its pretty good under foot here, was a struggle.

The finish line comes into view, from a long way off, high above Rosthwaite, well above the old slate quarry. It looks like a little toy village you could almost reach out and touch. You start to think this is you home, however there is still a lot of ground to cover and a leg bursting descent. Once you are over the old slate spoils its a steady descent down through the fields. It was quite a slippy slidey path this year because of all the wet mud. Once down we had to make a slight detour to find a bridge to cross the river back to the village. Normally you can run through the shallow ford in a direct line. This year it was a raging torrent well over waist deep!

The final stretch of track leads you back to the little maze of cottages and on to the finish line.

I managed to finish in 3hrs 19 mins in 129th place and Dan close behind in 3hrs 31mins and 179th, with 410 finishers and a further 10 dropping out along the way this put us well into the top half of the finishers.

Resting in the field watching the rest of the field coming in we were glad the race had been cut short. It would have meant maybe another hours worth of running and I for one was knackered.

It was odd that Scaffell Pike was detoured as the peaks we did get to did not seem to be too badly affected by the weather, though maybe the extra few hundred feet of altitude and the more severe conditions in the morning had obviously made the difference.

All in all a pretty good day out and a nice one to have under our belt for later on in the season.

Skiddaw Fell Race - 1st July 2007

Four members of ADAC tackled Skiddaw on a day which forecast heavy rain showers, however, the weather as much kinder and little rain was encountered during the race.  Cloud cover was well down though which was disappointing from the point of view of seeing anything if you have time to look.

The race was won by Andy Greenleaf(14AC) in 70.07 with Simon Booth (Borrowdale) in 2nd place in 70.15.  First home for ADAC in 75.52 was Mark Whitelaw who improved his time from 2006 by 5 minutes, finishing in 9th place.  In 85th place Jim Buchanan found it hard work in his first attempt at this race, while John Robson, nursing an injury was happy to take an easy run and complete the course in 109.34 in 108th place.  Jean completed the quartet coming home in 122nd place in 124.56 just as a heavy rain shower started.

Screel Hill Race - 14th April 2007

Good weather and underfoot conditions welcomed 46 competitors for this years event.  Five ADAC members tackled the race with Mark Whitelaw in 4th position in 32.52, followed by Roger Irving finishing 9th in 36.15.  Dan Watson was next home in 40.20minutes giving him 21st place with Jim Buchanan 29th in 45.20.  Jean Robson finished in 42nd place in 52.02. Members were concerned to hear from Jean that husband John had had a nasty cycle accident and good wishes were to be conveyed for a speedy recovery.

 

Langholm 5 Hills Race -31stMarch2007

Excellent weather and good conditions underfoot were the order of the day for this year’s Langholm Five Hills Race, which is one of the ADAC Hill Championship events. The competitors responded with some excellent times. Race winner Mark Whitelaw (ADAC) returned in a time of 69.33minutes, the first sub 70 minutes recent times and a 3 minutes improvement on his previous best. In second place Charlie Borthwick (Border Harriers) recorded another fast time of 70.50 minutes and Roger Irving (ADAC), recovering from injury, posted a time of 76.36 to gain the 3^rd spot.It was good to see Adam Anderson (Carnethy) taking part again, his time being 79.26, an improvement on his 2006 result.

In 5^th place and 1^st veteran, fast improving Andy Fairgrieve (ADAC) had a personal best of 81.34, an improvement of over 8 minutes, while in 6^th place another Border Harriers member, James Hyde, although not used to Hill Running, gave Andy stiff competition with his strength on the climbs with Andy retaliating on the downhill sections, finished in 81.55minutes. Stewart Pool performed well to complete the course in 88.45, Jim Buchanan (ADAC) in 97.56 and John Robson (ADAC) in 98.00 minutes were in 7^th, 8th, and 9^th positions. Fellow club member Nigel Priestley, returning after an absence from training was pleased with his 101.46 while Lindsey Knox (Teviotdale Harriers) enjoyed her outing, being first lady home in 113.31, followed by 2^nd lady, Jean Robson who did very well with map in hand to find her way round a difficult route in 128.00 minutes., Jim Knox (Teviotdale Harriers), being on the injured list, decided to walk the course and surprised himself by completing it in 140.43 minutes.

The race, 8 miles in distance with a climb of 2700 feet, took place under handicap conditions, all runners scheduling themselves to complete the course at 1230 pm.

Following presentation of the prizes, welcome plates of soup were provided by Roger and much appreciated by the participants. Thanks also to Roger for the race arrangements.

Criffell Hill Race - 18th March 2007

Mark on the ascent to Knockendoch

On the advice of the Mountain Rescue this years race was shortened to up and down Knockendoch, this was because of 40 mph winds resulting in temperatures down to -4C with some white stuff thrown in for good measure. The general opinion of the runners at the start was of disappointment and comments of "it’s not that bad, we would be all right after all we are hill runners, rough, tough and in the general publics eye’s mad". Funny though by the finish an about turn had taken place and maybe we are not quite as rough, tough and even as mad as we thought. It was the right decision.

If we thought for one minute that it would be far less a demanding race, think again, ploughing our way through knee deep peat bog for the majority of the course put paid to that whimsical thought. Going up and trying to find solid ground to give reasonable purchase was a lottery as we slipped and slurped all over the place therefore coming down was turned into a new extreme sport of "Skating In Thick Mud" invariably not always carried out in an upright position. Never the less 40 of us started and finished a bit dirtier and colder but all in one piece. Brian Marshal was a clear winner in 37.33 minutes with Andrew Wright 2nd in 39.10 minutes. First local runner home was 3^rd placed Marcus Scotney who runs for Shettleston in 40.57 minutes. In the ladies race Jill Mykura was 1^st home and 13^th over all in 46.15 minutes with local athlete Shirley Singh 2^nd in 56.02 minutes and 28^th over all.

Chapelgill Hill Race - 17th March 2007

44 runners took part in this years event with only one ADAC competitor. The race was won by Stewart Whittle of Carnethy in 21.15 with Alan Smith in 2nd place in 22.14.  John Robson completed the course in 27.10 finishing in 26th place.

Carnethy 5 Hills Race -17th February 2007

The record field of 487 runners at this years Carnethy 5 Hills Race were blessed with such a beautiful spring day that it was hard to believe that it was early February. No gale force winds and permafrost of a year ago, it was possible to warm up and stay warm without several layers of thermal protection. This race seems to have become the unofficial start to the New Year’s Hill Racing Season and is a first chance to see how friends/ competitors have come through the off season.

Five ADAC members ran and were reasonably happy with their performances as it is still early season. Andy Fairgrieve performed best of all to take 3.5 minutes off of his PB, it must be all that Tough Guy training!!

The race was won by defending champion Rob Jebb of Bingley closely followed by Jethro Lennox of Shettleston. Angela Mudge of Carnethy won the ladies race for the 10^th time beating Natalie White of Bingley into second place.
